APPLICATIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY
reviewed in The Mathematics Teacher, September 1996

Applications of Trigonometry is a hands-on video kit that introduces students to real-world applications of trigonometry. Various activities are supplied, including discussion topics, problems presented within the videotape, worksheets, transparencies and cumulative reviews.

This product is accurately described by its manufacturers. The content is mathematically sound, well sequenced, entertaining, and clearly presented. The actors kept my students' attention not only because they physically appeared to be one of their peers but also because the word choices were easy to understand.

The twenty-seven-minute videotape can be stopped at any point to allow class discussion and teacher intervention. Although the videotape is self-explanatory and follows a logical sequential order, teacher direction is encouraged. As viewers progress through the videotape, the classroom discussion is prompted. This kit would be most effectively used over four to seven class periods, forty to fifty minutes long. Excellent support materials are available. The authors advise how to use all written materials along with the videotape and suggest topics of discussion for use before the unit and topics of discussion for use as the units come to a close.

Applications of Trigonometry supports the objectives of the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989). The videotape is coherent and entertaining; the reproducible materials are concise and easy to read; the student worksheets are applicable to the units and contain excellent problems; and the overhead transparencies are clear, useful supplemental materials.
