To find the value of an algebraic expression, numbers must be substituted for the variables. In algebraic expressions, numbers substituted for the value of a variable are called the replacement set. The answers that are generated when the replacement set is substituted for the variables, are called the solution set.

Replacement Set

Expression

Solution Set

x = {4}

2x + 6

{14}

2(4) + 6

Replacement Set

Expression

Solution Set

x = { 5, 6, 7}

3x + 2

{17, 20, 23}

a = {3}; b = {2,5}

2a - 3b

{0, -9}

Find the solution set for the following expressions with the given replacement sets.

Replacement Set

Expression

Solution Set
Enter multiple answers in increasing order, separated by commas (such as -3,4).

x = {4}

4x + 4

a = {-2}; b = {1,3}
